Victims and Survivors Call for Immediate Action on Legacy Inquests.
The Time for Truth Campaign are calling for families impacted by the conflict to join with them in protest at Stormont where we will demand the immediate resourcing of the Lord Chief Justice’s 5-year plan to clear the backlog of legacy inquests.
- Where: Carson’s Statue, Front of Stormont
- When: 1130am, Thursday 8th November 2018
- Who: Families of the Time for Truth Campaign (family spokespersons available for comment on the day)
- Why: We demand the immediate and proper funding of the Lord Chief Justice’s 5-year plan for legacy inquests
- Call to Action: Campaigning families to bring banners/photos
The protest – organised for next Thursday 8th November at 1130am – marks 8 months since Justice Girvan’s judgment in Brigid Hughes’ successful legal challenge of the Stormont Executive and British Government’s ongoing failure to fund the 5-year plan.
Last week, the Department of Justice developed a comprehensive business plan for the funding which has been endorsed by the Department of Finance before submission to the British Government.
Speaking on behalf of the Time for Truth Campaign, Ciarán MacAirt said:
“The protest will gather outside Stormont House, the NIO base in the North, and we will demand the immediate release of the required funding to allow outstanding legacy inquests to proceed. All families, regardless of background or creed, should have access to due process. Inquests should be timely and human rights compliant but some families have waited for a proper inquest for their loved ones for nearly half a century and many family members have gone to their grave waiting.
“Our campaign is urging all campaign groups and concerned citizens to join us and show their solidarity.”
