National Day of Action Ormeau Bookies Massacre v Office of the Police Ombudsman

Protest at the Office of the Police Ombudsman – Press Release

The families of the Time for Truth Campaign will be protesting against the Office of the Police Ombudsman due to its ongoing failure to publish completed reports into murders involving British state collusion.

What/Where: Protest at the Office of the Police Ombudsman, Writer’s Square, Belfast

Who: Families of the Time for Truth Campaign

When: 11am – 1130 am, Thursday 9th September 2021

Spokesperson for the Time for Truth Campaign, Ciarán MacAirt said:

“The families of the Time for Truth Campaign are standing shoulder-to-shoulder with these families and demanding that the Police Ombudsman immediately releases outstanding reports.”

“The bereaved families and injured victims have had to stomach denial and delay for too long. Victims and survivors have faced police attempts to undermine the statutory powers of the Office of the Police Ombudsman; they have had to suffer police failure to disclose critical evidence which proved state agents were directly involved in the murder of their loved ones.”

“Today they have to face the fear that Britain will give an amnesty to its killers and deny families access to due legal process – legislative proposals which would shame a Third World dictatorship.”

“But the denial to publish completed investigations lies with the Office of the Police Ombudsman and that is why our families are protesting here today.” /ENDS

Time for Truth’s modest demands:

·       Implement the Stormont House Agreement in a human rights compliant manner and properly resource its mechanisms for dealing with the legacy of the past;

·       Provide proper funding for the Lord Chief Justice`s 5-year legacy inquest plan;

·       Provide adequate funding to allow the Office of the Police Ombudsman to complete outstanding historic investigations;

·       Fulfil outstanding Weston Park legacy Agreements and hold a public inquiry into the State murder of human rights lawyer Pat Finucane.

The families of the Time for Truth Campaign have campaigned to protect the rights of victims and survivors of the conflict in the face of British Government intransigence and failure to address the legacy of the conflict in the North of Ireland. Our fears over the British Government’s proposed Legacy Bill are shared by leading Human Rights NGO’s, academics and lawyers. Link >>>
