Time for Truth March, February 2018

Launch of the Second Time for Truth March

The families of the Time for Truth Campaign will launch the second Time for Truth March at an event in An Cultúrlann MacAdam Ó Fiaich, Falls Road, Belfast, at 12pm, Thursday 9th May 2019.

A second Time for Truth March will take place on Sunday 9th June 2019 as a direct response to the British state’s continued failure to deal with the legacy of the past in the north of Ireland.

It follows the success of the first Time for Truth March on February 25th 2018 which saw over 7,000 families and friends from across the island take to the streets of Belfast in support of the Time for Truth Campaign.

The families of the Time for Truth Campaign will again march for their 3 simple, modest demands:

1. Implement and adequately resource the Stormont House Agreement legacy mechanisms in a human rights compliant manner

2. Adequately resource the Lord Chief Justice’s 5-year plan to clear the backlog in legacy inquests

3. Adequately resource the Office of the Police Ombudsman to allow it to complete outstanding historical investigations

Speaking on behalf of the families of the Time for Truth Campaign, Ciarán MacAirt said:

“Yet again the continued intransigence of the British state and its failure to deal with the legacy of the past has forced our families to take to the streets to seek our basic human rights. Some of our families have been fighting for nearly half a century for a proper investigation or inquest into the death of loved ones. The Stormont House Agreement was agreed in December 2014 but the British state failed to implement it. Since then, it has deliberately blocked and underfunded any other avenue our families have for seeking truth and justice for our family members killed during the conflict.”

“In October 2018, we gathered nearly 15,000 responses to the NIO consultation, Addressing the Legacy of the Past, and were promised that we would see the British Government’s response to that by January 2019. We are still waiting for that response. In the meantime, we have gathered thousands of signatories in a petition supporting our 3 demands.”

“On Thursday we will launch the second Time for Truth March which we have scheduled for 12pm Sunday 9th June in Belfast and ask citizens across the country ‘Will you march with us’.”
