Presentation to the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs

Time for Truth Campaign presents to the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE).

A family representative of the Time for Truth Campaign is in Brussels today (Tuesday 2nd April 2019) to brief politicians of the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, chaired by Claude Moraes MEP (British Labour Party and Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament).

Ciarán MacAirt (McGurk’s Bar Campaign) is representing families of the Time for Truth Campaign at an exchange of views with the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) in the European Parliament, Brussels.

Ciaran MacAirt will brief LIBE on the objectives of the Time for Truth Campaign and update the Committee on the British Government’s failure to deal with the legacy of the past in the North of Ireland. After the presentation, there will be an opportunity for LIBE to ask questions and exchange views.

The Time for Truth Campaign presentation will include:

·        An introduction to the Time for Truth Campaign and its work over the past year

·        The Time for Truth Campaign’s 3 demands:

1. Implement and adequately resource the Stormont House Agreement legacy mechanisms in a human rights compliant manner

2. Adequately resource the Lord Chief Justice’s 5-year plan to clear the backlog in legacy inquests

3. Adequately resource the Office of the Police Ombudsman to allow it to complete outstanding historical investigations

·        Legacy update and discussion including:

§  The failure to implement the Stormont House Agreement

§  The implications of recent legal cases regarding the murders of human rights lawyer Pat Finucane and Jean Smyth-Campbell

§  The failures of the Police Service Northern Ireland and British Government to deal with the legacy of the past

Ciarán MacAirt said:

“Family representatives of the Time for Truth Campaign met with Claude Moraes MEP during our last visit to the European Parliament in Brussels in February which was facilitated with the great support of Martina Anderson MEP.”

“We are very grateful to Mr. Moraes and the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs for this opportunity to garner international support for our objectives and to seek a Motion for Resolution on our Time for Truth Campaign. This exchange of views comes at a time of great fear and hurt among victims and survivors of the conflict caused by the British Government’s continuing failure to deal with the legacy of the past in the North of Ireland and attempts to stymie our families’ access to justice.”
